Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017)

Now Streaming on Netflix
Director: Chris Moukarbel
Starring: Lady Gaga

Chronicling the lead-up to her Superbowl 51 performance, Chris Moukarbel paints a picture of a humble and pleasant Lady Gaga that Monsters and non-fans alike would enjoy. It is a revealing, behind the scenes look at the balance between superstar and everyday woman.

It’s still not possible to view her as anything but a celebrity; she remarks as much when she breaks down after struggling with an injury suffered during her Born This Way tour. What do people without money do, she laments. But it’s not arrogant. It’s revelatory. She’s still humble throughout the documentary despite her fame and means. And I think that’s the point. Lady Gaga has always enticed the media to examine what it means to be celebrity. Mourkabel’s previous documentary Me @ the Zoo featured a similar lampooning of the cult of celebrity.

This was a fun watch that is easy to recommend. Gone are the days of the meat dress and shock value couture, but seeing Lady Gaga in her stripped down, post Joanne phase is so refreshing. Don’t worry, she’s still enough of the tyrant of her own personal world that it keeps it entertaining.

Is it Watchlist-worthy? Yes!
